Whiting Design is a sustainable design firm.

Our scope includes new homes, additions, retrofits, commercial, and adaptive re-use projects within a 100km radius of our office. We have been leaders in the sustainable design field, particularly residential, since 2003, and contribute to many regional and international forums encouraging the promotion of green design principles, energy and water use reduction, and healthy homes.

We work with clients who want to reduce their environmental impact and create spaces which are beautiful, functional, and economical in the process. We strive for candour, objectivity, and to move beyond assumptions to provide a better way to live. Many of our projects incorporate existing structures, improving efficiency and re-invigorating space. While involved in the design of new, larger developments and planning initiatives, we advocate for re-use, smaller buildings, urban density, intelligent and multi functional use of space, and higher attention to detail and quality rather than maximum footprint.

We are ordinary people with extraordinary ideas.

Currently a faculty member at Conestoga College, teaching Building Science and Green Building, he has an open source approach to knowledge, knowing that to effect real change good ideas need to be shared..

Graham holds a position on Ontario Green Spec's advisory panel for the Home Sweet Home Student Challenge, is a supporting member of Community Renewable Energy Waterloo, speaks and writes frequently on sustainability issues, volunteers for CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener Area), is a member of the Streetscape Redesign Committee for Waterloo, served as a juror for Design Exchange Waterloo, and actively participates in Ignite and TEDxWaterloo.

An entrepreneur and Waterloo resident since 1989, Graham is proud to be a part of the most innovative city in Canada, as well as father to three of the most interesting small people on the planet.
Our interns are community-minded, design-oriented, sustainably-driven people.

They are a critical part of our office structure as we believe in integrating and sharing knowledge and skills.

We regularly hire co-op students as well as contract and research positions.

If you are interested in being an intern at our office, send us an email.

We want to hear from you.
What does sustainability mean to you?

At Whiting Design we have a deep understanding of buildings and their impact on the environment. You are here because you share an interest in doing things a better way. A way that acknowledges that, as privileged Canadians, we have an opportunity to be world leaders in reducing our impact while enjoying unparalleled prosperity.

Our goal is to reverse the impact of buildings. That is, through our projects, we strive to create a net energy and CO2 reduction. To measure this, we have tracked the before and after emissions of all our own projects, the results of which will be available soon in the research section of this site. We are also a 100% Pledging member of Sustainable Waterloo's Regional Carbon Initiative, to reduce our own operations to net zero or better.

We are not preachers (though we love being asked for our opinion!). We are a resource that you can use to change the space you're in, to one that:

is healthier
is smarter
uses less energy
strengthens your local economy
reduces fossil fuel dependency
enables a lower energy lifestyle
is sustainable. For everyone.

Everyone needs to play.

We have created our own playground called Design Camp.
Four times a year, we take a day to solve a problem.

There are lots of interesting places in our city, which for various reasons are overlooked, aging, undeveloped, lonely. We bring these places into the foreground as a theoretical design project, and put all our resources into a creative solution for them, for a day.

Through Design Camp we will be pushing the boundaries of design to see what such spaces can do for our city.
The results of our first design camp can be found on the Projects Page, under CC for Container Concept.
